Sun and skin cancer

This post is not just for “Sun worshippers!” but for the rest of us who enjoy living as well!

We all have heard about the ozone layer, ozone is a molecule living in the atmosphere, and the ozone layer protects us against the harmful effects of sunshine.  It absorbs the ultraviolet portion of radiation from the sun, preventing it from reaching the mother earth surface. Ultraviolet light has been linked to many problems such as skin cancer, cataracts, and other problems.

Now we know that amongst other things, man made products are depleting the atmosphere from this shield. Therefore we receive more than our share from the UV light.

UV light is an important risk factor in getting Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) which  “is the most common cancer in humans”  according to Dr. Nicholas F.V. Hogg in an article written in Oral Health, June 2013 issue,  under the title of ” Surgical Management of Basal Cell Carcinoma”.

The best treatment is prevention. Staying away from sun between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. Wearing sun screen lotion with high SPF and repeated application of it. Staying away from tanning beds and encouraging policies against depletion of ozone layer.

The most common place for getting BCC is the head and the neck and as dentists we can see them readily.

As per Dr. Hogg: ” BCC is slow growing and has a low potential to metastasize, however it is locally invasive and destructive. Early diagnosis is important as it improves the functional and esthetic outcome for the patient.”

Sugar, sugar and more sugar

We all have heard about the effect of sugar on our teeth. We have bacteria in our mouth, after all our mouth is the biggest opening with the environment,they love sugar, they eat the leftover sugar found in our mouth to produce acid and acid eats our teeth away. Now, I was reading an article by Bonnie Giampa and Briar Krieger titled “Sugar beyond the Oral Cavity: Are you Addicted?” in Preventive Dentistry Canada magazine – Vol. 3 No. 3-Fall 2012, which I would like to share in here with you.

In this article, they claim: “Sugar is the root of so many problems that it should probably be sold with a warning that says: Sugar can increase your risk of developing cancer, heart disease, varicose veins, kidney disorders, arthritis, diabetes, obesity, migraine headaches and high blood pressure.” The functioning of our immune system is also severely affected by sugar consumption. Refined sugar contains no fiber, no minerals, no proteins, no fats, no enzymes, only empty calories. What happens when you eat a refined carbohydrate like sugar? Your body must borrow vital nutrients from healthy cells to metabolize the incomplete food. Calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium are taken from various parts of the body to make use of the sugar. Sugar is void of all these nutrients; consequently it causes the body to deplete its own cache of various vitamins, minerals and enzymes. If sugar consumption is continued, an over-acid condition results, and more minerals are needed from deep in the body to correct the imbalance. If the body is lacking the nutrients used to metabolize sugar, it will not be able to properly handle and rid itself of poisonous residue. These wastes accumulate through the brain and nervous system, which speeds up cellular death.”

Wow, do we need any more reasons to cut sugar out our diet?
